Palawan, edge of the freaking earth. Well, close enough for me. Its nearly a year ago now I visited this place- a national geographic wonderland. Opting for adventure instead of the now over-run white sands of Boracay- we hopped an eight seater and bounced through the sky due south. We landed on a dirt strip in a sugar cane field, were greeted with a cup of tang in a shack and camo guards with M-80's, our driver was 4 hours late because of a broken road, even the guards left us to fend for ourselves. Finally made it to the resort, only to be greeted by a mine field of falling coconuts from very tall trees. Did I mention I was with my ex? The room next door housed a plump and cranky russian guy, with a lovely young girl, both exuding a peculiar bedside manner night after night. Over the course of the week, i saw them sit in silence, through breakfasts and dinners, and many cigarettes, but evening commenced and so did they. We took glorious banka rides through rough seas, not a life jacket in sight, sea spray smacking us in the face at warp speeds. The only calm I found was under the water with a snorkel, except when some creature would nip at my foot and send me into a panic. A walk on the beach seemed the perfect remedy, only if those guys with machetes and loin cloths didnt approach me sharpening their tools. I had stepped to far- and for the first time I noticed it.

And upon that realization, and recognizing fear, something left that I can seem to get back.
